Recently it seems like everything I come across is about who we really are. Everything I read, every Youtube video and every blog post.
The Buddha refused to answer questions on the nature of who we are. Vacchagotta asked the Buddha “Is there a self?” and “Is there no self”. The buddha simply did not answer and Vacchagotta left. There is much debate why the Buddha did not answer such questions. Some say because he new the truth and there is nothing more than what we are on this earth, a body with thought. Others believe he did not answer to avoid confusing people, believing that the ego would use this knowledge to taint people into a false view. I believe something similar to the later, that the Buddha new the truth and there is something more than just our bodies and thoughts.
Jesus said “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.” He meant by this statement that he, like the Buddha, saw the truth and knew that we are all of something beyond this earth. When he says “You are of this world” he simply means that most of us are not aware of this truth and wander through life not realizing who we truly are. The Buddha said “all living beings possess the Buddha nature” and taught a method to help us all realize this truth.
